In our blackberry story from the September vegetable patch, Blackberry really wants to ripen up and darken, but finds it really hard to find a good place to get some sunshine.

The Foodies bring you vegetable patch stories for every month of the year, and all the characters, scenery and weather are in season that month.

September’s story features blackberries, which are not only in the shops but also available to pick in the hedgerows in the UK. Children can enjoy Blackberry’s  fun adventure and then learn all about how blackberries grow, go and find some in the shops (or on a foraging walk!) and cook a lovely blackberry recipe from the back of the book.

This story is all how fruit ripens and turns darker in the sun and how to be safe in the sunshine, and the free downloads build on that theme.

It was a glorious sunny September day in the garden. Blackberry was looking forward to some sunbathing…

In this story, Blackberry is still quite pink and really wants to be black like the bigger berries. She knows she needs to get some sun to ripen and go dark, but everywhere she goes someone throws her into the shade.

The story lends itself to discussions of why humans need to be careful in the sun. Our free downloadable activities explore the theme of sun safety in more depth, with games about sun loving and sun sensitive creatures, an experiment to explore hydration, and a dressing up game to stay sun safe.
